This week I experienced a concept which features in the blockbuster movie Inception. Its the concept that we can have a dream within a dream. The dream started where I was trying to get my a girl away from her ex boyfriend. I ran and ran, dragging the girl along with me so the man couldnt get to her. I had her in one hand, and my mobile phone in the other, debating whether to dial 999 to call the police. At this point I woke up in my bed in a house I used to live in. For the life of me I believed I had woken up. The girl then came into my room, I asked if she dreamt the same thing to which she replied she did. At this point I think my mind caught up with me and I woke up for real in my actual bed in ‘the real world’. Upon waking I couldnt help but smile as it shows the depth we can have within a dream. A dream within a dream. What if I had of just kept waking up in another bed, never waking to what I believe is reality. That is the almost the story of ‘Inception’. Believing what is real.

This might sound rather bizarre to you, but when researching the power of our dreams. I came across a technique called Sleep-Learning. When we are asleep we access our subconscious mind. The reason people believe it is possible to learn in their sleep is because what you hear while sleeping could go into your mind and then be used at a later date. Lets be honest, we couldnt be more relaxed when we are asleep. Plus the fact there are very few distractions when you are asleep.

According to Wikipedia the whole thing is nonsense, and scientists claim that it in fact could be nearer impossible to learn while you sleep. Then again, scientists have been wrong before, and they cant explain everything. What it comes down to is what you believe. If you listen to a ‘Learn Chinese’ audio tape then test someone the next day as to whether they have learnt it, id probably bet that they would remember anything. However, if you were awake listening to the audio tape then the following day you test yourself, you might also not be able to remember anything. The mind is a very powerful part of our body. It is important to never underestimate it.

Have you ever wondered exactly why we dream? What is the purpose of the dream? We know if makes us feel an emotion, which I highlighted in the previous blog post, but what is the purpose of our dreams? Are they to teach us, or make us aware of something? Are they used to give us guidance on a past or future event?

I sometimes find it very difficult to understand why I have dreamt about a certain person or situation. Some cases are really quite bizarre. I experience deja vu quite regularly and I sometimes wonder whether I experience this because I have dreamt the situation before. Sometimes a dream can be about something that has happened that I wasnt aware of. For instance is the dream informing me of something that I should know about to educate me? The possibilities are endless because our minds are, and whatever we decide to put it down to can always just come down to coincidence. Its just whether you want to believe its coincidence or meant to be.

The power of a dream can really be quite interesting. We all go to sleep to rest our minds and prepare ourselves for the next day. However when some peoples head hits the below the mind does not fully go to sleep and decides to wander into dreamland. Some people ignore their dreams, some people follow their dreams. What does it all mean?

Have you ever woken from a dream feeling scared? happy? upset? … Have you ever wondered exactly how strange this is? Your body is asleep, you are just thinking in your subconscious and your mind is making it real, making you experience what you are dreaming as if it is real. Upon waking the emotion is so strong, if you dream of a loved one being ill or dying, you wake up concerned and upset. Sometimes to the point where you could cry. Some people dream about having sex and it feels so real that they actually experience a wet dream. But the act is not real. This shows just how powerful a dream can be.

I believe the powerfulness of the dream is because we are actually taking part in the dream and are ‘tricked’ into thinking that it is real. If you just daydream at work, you are still aware of your surroundings and therefore it doesnt feel as real. Maybe dreams arent just thoughts and pointless thoughts and perhaps are a look back at a previous life, alternative universe or the future.

Is it strange that as I have a keen interest in dreams I also like films involving dreams in them? One of my favourite films of all time is Vanilla Sky. It stars Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz. The film at some point becomes a dream. Many people question exactly when this is because the film always makes a reference to ‘Open your eyes’ which is the main characters alarm clock. The film touches on many interesting points about Dreams such as Lucid Dreaming and Night terrors. The final screen also has a lot of depth as the main character has to face his fear of height by jumping off a sky scrapper to wake himself up. Is it a trick in his head, or is it real? Its up to the viewer… Open your Eyes

In my opinion the best film of 2010 was arguably Inception. The film was centred around dreams and the levels of dreams which we can encounter. As I have a huge interest in dreams I could relate to a lot of the more difficult questions asked in the film. Such as the realisation when you are in a dream that you are dreaming. The main characters way of doing this is to spin a pendant. If it falls, he is awake. If it continues to spin he knows he is dreaming because every spinning pendant has to fall.

Although both of these films could be considered blockbusters. They still touch on interesting issue regarding dreams. They teach people more about the understanding of dreams if they want to listen.

During the day through out the whole day our bodies works constantly to ensure that our body is operating correctly and scientifically this slowly breaks function of the cells. We recognise this as tiredness and by sleeping this activity gives the body a chance to recuperate and build and replace the cells. Lack of sleep will effect you by causing tiredness, drowsiness, lack of efficiency and with no energy. Even beauty experts recognise the need for sleep which helps maintain healthy skin, rid bags under the eyes and generally keep you looking young.

There are certain conditions which help people fall asleep more than others. For example, after a heavy meal some people say they feel sleepy, if they are in a warm dry relaxing atmosphere then the chances of sleeping are greater. When we go to sleep our metabolic rate slows down as well as everything across the rest of the body. The energy otherwise used by the body to keep the body awake decreases and instead it concentrates on repairing tissue and healing the body to revitalise. The nerve connections in the synaptic nerve are revitalised and these form part of the local memory.

Many of our dreams consist of activities, thoughts, actions which have been consciously or even unconsciously carried out by you. Your conscious thoughts access part of the brain and its this what the brain remembers and creates dreams from. Sometimes if you are thinking about something during the day the chances are that you are likely to have a dream about it. In some religions dreams signify events which have taken place in your life. In some cases if you see things that you never imagined or came across then it’s said that these are images embedded in the soul and have been carried forward from previous life’s.

When sleeping many people are seen to be flickering there eyes as if moving them around but with the eyelids shut. This is called REM and stands for Rapid Eye Movement which occurs at a point in time when the person is dreaming. As we get older we require less sleep – for example teenagers are known for needing the most sleep – generally this is due to the growth which occurs at this point in there life. Newborn babies too tend to sleep nearly 60% of the time and after birth need to put into a routine to work out day and night to fit in with the environment around them.
